Life Moves Pretty Fast

It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog post. If you follow me on social media, I’ve been quiet there, too. That’s ’cause a lot has been happening in my life over the course of the past month. This post should get you up to speed.

First off–no, I’m not pregnant. It’s the first question everyone seems to ask when I say I have news. Which is fair, I guess. I’m 37 years old and madly in love. But that’s not the news.

The Viking and I at a wedding. He's wearing a kilt. It's pretty awesome.

The Viking and me at a wedding. He’s so handsome.

The Viking, his two kids, and I are now living together. It’s awesome.

That’s part of the big news, but many people who know me know that news and that the colocation plans have been in the works for awhile.

The bigger news is job related. On July 28th, I will be leaving Durham County Library, a system I’ve worked for for ten years and on August 1st I will start my new job in the Sales and Marketing Unit at NoveList. While I’m excited, I’m also sad to be leaving Durham County Library and Southwest Regional Library. Being a public librarian has meant a lot to me. Working as a librarian has been part of how I’ve defined myself for the past ten years. At NoveList, I will still be a librarian, but my job will be very different.

So, you may be asking, what is NoveList? The simple answer is, “If you like to read, run–don’t walk–to your library and ask if they have NoveList.” I’m not saying that because they will be my new employers; I’d have given the same answer before the job was posted and I’d applied.

But, that doesn’t really answer your question.

NoveList is a database for readers. It will help you find your next favorite book based on books you’ve already read and enjoyed. NoveList staff break books down into appeal factors (pacing, setting, tone, characterization, etc). As a reader, you can see the appeal factors for, say, Laura Florand’s books or Molly O’Keefe’s books, check the ones that are important to you, and the database will pop back other books with the same appeal factors.

But wait! There’s more!

Books, authors, and series have descriptions written by librarians. There are read-alikes written by librarians. Suggested reading articles written by librarians. Book discussion guides written by librarians. And this all exists for fiction and nonfiction, picture books through adult books.

In short, NoveList is an amazing resource for readers and I get to work there.

All these changes are exciting. My life has been a bit of a whirlwind for the past couple months. Wish me luck on my new journeys!

Wow, Jennifer! Definitely a lot of changes, and they all sound good. I have 3 questions: 1-Will you continue to lead our Romance book club? 2-Will you continue to write novels? 3-Will you have less of a commute with the new job? ….. I hope the answer is “yes” to all 3 questions, btw. Congrats on recharging and redirecting your life!

Thank you! And, yes, no diapers. With three cats, two chickens, 1 dog, and one boa, we have enough poop to go around. No need to a baby to add to it 😉
